I recently read an article that mentioned Brené Brown’s take on belonging versus fitting in. She explained that when you belong, you let your authentic self expand. You accept yourself, flaws and all, and your tribe has your back. When you fit in, you change who you are to suit the room. One year ago today I decided to stop drinking alcohol. I was a white wine drinker and it had become almost a daily habit. If I met someone for a meal I had a glass. If I got home late after an event I had a glass. If I went away for the weekend I had a few glasses. So many hidden, liquid calories.
So I just decided to stop. Cold turkey. For the first six months it didn’t make much difference. Then last January I decided to try Tim Ferriss’ slow carb lifestyle. And I lost 23 pounds. Continue reading

Olympian artistry
We just returned from the North American Irish Dance Championships held this year in Vancouver. Thirty-five-hundred dancers and 20,000 family and friends descended on the city for a week full of Olympian artistry. The gorgeous venue overlooked the Pacific Ocean and the first thing I noticed after the salt-water breeze was the air of expectation. It was palpable. Continue reading
