You know those little things that happen and make us smile? Make us grateful and thankful? We can all quickly write a list of what those little things are for us.
Things like finding twenty dollars in the pocket of an old coat. Hearing from a friend from years gone by. Seeing a butterfly land near us as we sit outside. Watching the sun make diamond shapes on deep blue lake water. Receiving flowers. Being complimented on your outfit or shoes or haircut. Feeling your child grab your hand. Realizing the person in front of you has paid for your coffee in the drive through. Buying something and finding out it’s discounted more than you originally thought. Eating a delicious dinner that someone has made for you. Getting a birthday card in the mail. Being recognized for an accomplishment. Finding out someone took care of a chore for you. Sitting down for a hot cup of tea after a crisp, autumn walk. Seeing someone stand up for you.
Being grateful for the little things is a big thing. Taking notice. Being in the moment.
Those little things remind us that we are exactly where we are supposed to be. They are little love notes from the universe.
French author and World War I soldier Georges Bernanos once said, “Little things seem nothing, but they give peace, like those meadow flowers which individually seem odorless but all together perfume the air.”
As we approach this weekend of thanksgiving, let us be thankful for all of life’s little blessings. And may we breathe in with gratitude the beautiful life we are living.
