So much can be taken from First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech yesterday.  She spoke about respecting women.  About the power of words.  Especially when they come from the powerful.
As we watch our children watching the drama that is the American presidential election, I hope there are opportunities for discussion.  About each person owning their own body. About all of us being so much more than the skin and bones we present to the outside world.  About the importance of our thoughts and our soul.  And how they are affected when someone is treated like an object.
I hope we also have the chance to talk about why women are judged for speaking out when something happens to them.  Why it always seems to come down to her behaviour, her past, and her timeline?  Why her word is not enough.
Michelle Obama said, “The measure of any society is how it treats its women and girls.”
We are not only at a crossroads in the presidential race.  We are at a crossroads in the human race. Which way will we go?
Young people are waiting to see what we feel is important.  Let’s make sure we show them that respect for others is the only way to live.  As Michelle Obama once said, “When they go low, we go high.”
